FAQ
I want to learn about the US education system?
Education System
Education System
The United States is known for its top-quality liberal education, which allows students to explore and orient their careers according to their interests and strengths.
The American educational foundation is considered a benchmark for education systems in many other countries. Prestigious educational organizations like QS and Times Higher Education have published numerous annual rankings, with up to two-thirds of US universities ranking in the top 10 globally.
Specifically, the US education system is somewhat similar to Vietnam’s, divided into three levels: Elementary, Secondary, and Higher Education.
Elementary and Secondary Education
This is considered the compulsory education program mandated by the US government, starting from grade 1 to grade 12, with three main stages:
- Elementary/PrimarySchool: From 5 or 6 years old to 10 years old.
- MiddleSchool/JuniorHigh: From 11 to 13 years old.
- HighSchool: From 14 to 18 years old.
Starting from secondary school, students are introduced to choosing their classes, schedules, and teachers. Literature and Math are mandatory subjects, depending on the grade level. Some elective subjects include Science, Foreign Language, Computer, PE, and Art.
Higher Education
In the US, higher education includes Undergraduate – College, Master’s, Doctoral, and post-Doctoral research. Currently, there are over 5,000 universities and colleges with a diverse range of fields, providing many choices for both US citizens and international students depending on their orientation and conditions.
Typically, students spend four years completing their studies at public or private universities and colleges. However, some students opt to study at community colleges for the first two years to obtain an associate degree at a lower tuition cost and then transfer to regular universities for the remaining two years.
Most schools in the US highly value diversity. This means that a classroom will have many students of different ages, nationalities, and religions.
This creates a multicultural learning environment, offering students opportunities to interact with each other, gaining certain experiences and understanding in various fields, while also forming wide-ranging relationships.
Moreover, the US education system always emphasizes practicality. Throughout their studies, students engage in practical activities and receive specific guidance on applying the knowledge and theories learned to real life.
Additionally, to enhance the effectiveness of their studies and future work, instructors often encourage creative thinking, independent debate skills, and critical thinking. Instead of just rote learning, students in the US are provided with core knowledge to grasp the essence of issues and have a comprehensive understanding. This is also a core feature of the entire US education system.
I want to learn about the US social welfare system?
Social Welfare System
The United States attracts many immigrants not only because of its strong economic development with many job opportunities in large companies but also due to its excellent social welfare system.
The country is known for its advanced medical measures, many highly specialized experts and doctors, and top-notch healthcare services.
The appeal of social welfare programs in the US lies in the financial assistance policies provided by the government for workers.
Social Security
Federal social security benefits provided by the US government include pensions, medical benefits, nursing home care, and disability benefits.
Unemployment Benefits
The US unemployment benefits do not require workers to have savings; they only need to apply for unemployment after leaving a job.
Public Assistance
This assistance is considered based on each individual’s current living conditions and is provided to low-income individuals, the elderly, the disabled, and households with no income.
Unemployment Insurance
Similar to Vietnam, each month, a portion of a worker’s salary is deducted to pay for insurance. Unemployment insurance benefits are received as compensation. The management and implementation of unemployment insurance programs vary from state to state.
Worker Compensation
Business and company owners are required to pay insurance to the government or an insurance company. Thus, workers injured on the job receive a certain amount of compensation. This compensation applies to non-US citizens as well, without affecting their status change or immigration for settlement.
Medical Assistance
Medical assistance includes medication subsidies, home care programs, and care programs for elderly immigrants.
Living Assistance for Low-Income Individuals
Some notable assistance programs include providing food vouchers to exchange for US-produced agricultural products, offering cheap or free meals to schools, subsidizing household energy costs, offering affordable rental housing or public housing, and more.
How long does it take to get an opportunity to immigrate to the US?
Becoming a US citizen requires a lengthy process; however, if you reside in the US for an extended period (5 years), this presents a great opportunity for you. The US government ensures that all residents receive full benefits as per regulations, in any field, as long as they live and work according to the law.
What are the current US immigration categories and procedures?
Below is a simple summary. To learn more details, click on the specific program above.
Family-Sponsored Immigration
Currently, the US government allows five categories of family-sponsored immigration:
- F4: Siblings of US citizens.
- F3: Married children of US citizens.
- F2B: Unmarried children of green card holders.
- F2A: Spouses and unmarried children under 21 of green card holders.
- F1: Unmarried children over 21 of US citizens.
Investment-Based Immigration EB-5
The EB-5 (Employment Base Fifth) program was announced by the US government in 1990, providing an opportunity for foreign residents to immigrate to the US through investment.
Currently, there are two investment categories. Investors can either make a direct investment (also known as self-investment) in any location with a minimum budget of $1,800,000, or make an indirect (delegated) investment in projects managed by Regional Centers with a minimum budget of $900,000.
Employment-Based Immigration EB-3
Approved by the US Immigration Law, EB-3 (Employment-Based Third Category) is a skilled labor immigration program for foreigners wishing to work or settle in the US with their families.
The EB-3 program targets skilled workers, unskilled workers, university graduates, professionals, and more. All participants are issued a green card (permanent resident card).
Currently, there are four specific categories:
- EB1: Workers with extraordinary research, leadership, or managerial abilities.
- EB2: Workers with advanced degrees.
- EB3: Skilled or unskilled workers.
- EB4: Religious workers.
What is a US green card?
A green card (permanent resident card) is considered a valuable ticket allowing foreigners to legally and permanently enter the US.
With this card, you will enjoy all benefits, such as free education costs for children under 18, access to scholarships and grants from major universities, and opportunities to obtain credit for purchasing cars, houses, or establishing your own company.
The green card issued under the EB-3 immigration program is valid for 10 years and can be easily renewed for another 10 years.
